As a business owner and new mom who’s also working a 9 to 5, I’ve found myself struggling to manage all three – my job, my business, and time with my family – well.
It can be so difficult to find the time and energy to both be present with my son and productive in my business.
But over the last few months, I’ve done a lot of work to identify the key things that I need to do to thrive as both a mother and a business owner. After taking the time to figure out what was working and what wasn’t, I realized that being in control of my life and creating a life I love starts with five things.
If you’re struggling to manage your time well, be present with your kids, and build your dream business, these five keys may be helpful for you, too.
Know Your Vision
First things first. You can’t spend your time well without first understanding what you want your life to look like.
Taking the time to get clear on the vision you have for your life, including your relationships and your business, ensures that you will focus on the right things and feel more at peace with your to-do list each day.
Your vision is the driver for every action and will help you simplify your life and focus on the things that matter.
Put Yourself First
Productivity isn’t just about managing your time, it’s also about managing your energy. If you feel drained, you won’t be able to pour into your kids or your business. Chances are, your job will end of getting the best of you, and you will struggle to keep everything else afloat.
Instead, putting yourself first ensures that you have the energy to give to others. When you put yourself first, you make time for the things that fill you up EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. You take care of yourself so that you can take care of others and pursue your dreams without feeling overwhelmed.
Want to start and end every day feeling rejuvenated instead of overwhelmed? That’s what happens when you put yourself first.
Own Your Time
When trying to beat the overwhelm, it’s often tempting to start with this key – owning your time. But until you’re clear on your vision and have the energy to give to being present and productive, focusing on time management will ultimately be fruitless. It’s why so many to-do lists go unfinished and you keep giving up before you ever really get started.
But when you have a clear vision and the energy to pursue it, you can start using time management tools to organize your day-to-day productivity. By understanding how you currently spend your time and then learning how to create to-do lists that actually work, you’ll be able to move the needle in your business and spend more time with your family without feeling completely overwhelmed by a task list that’s forever long.
Create Routines & Systems
Once you have a way to get things done day-to-day, you can start to implement routines and systems.
Routines and systems put things on autopilot and free up space for the things that matter most. So instead of creating a new to-do list with every task every day, you’ll be able to get ahead of your work and know what’s coming up when.
This is when things really start to take off – when you’ll start to feel the true freedom of a business that runs smoothly and is growing steadily.
Work less? I can hear it now, “It’s just not possible. Not for me.”
I get it. I’ve been in the season where I feel like I have to be working more, not less, to make my dreams a reality. But, the truth is, until we learn to let go of all the tasks that we think we *have* to be doing, we won’t be able to focus on the things that ultimately matter most, like our family.
That’s why this key is all about simplifying your business and finding ways to be intentional about your time with your family.
